June 8th, opening day of Boulder Beach. As soon as the warm weather rolls into North Idaho, our kids begin anxiously waiting for the water park to open. This was our third adventure to Silverwood this season and each time they have asked why we couldn’t go to the water park, we kept assuring them opening day was right around the corner.
Finally, opening day was upon us however, the hot weather and sunny skies did not. As we arrived at Silverwood, the temperature was around the mid 60’s with a 60% chance of thunderstorms. (Bummed is an understatement!) There were some brave souls who decided to enjoy the water park however, our family does not enjoy cold temperatures, so we were not among them. I was left asking myself “what do you do when you promise your kids a day full of water fun?”
We decided to make the best of it. After all, there were rumors that the Seahawks and Seahawks dancers (formerly named Seagals) were all around the park riding rides and signing autographs. Maybe, just maybe, we would be the lucky few who caught a glimpse of them. Maybe even an autograph.
It was our lucky day! We were able to catch some players as they were racing from Timber Terror to the Panic Plunge. Both our boys got autographs from Seahawks players’ safety, Tedric Thompson, and cornerback Neiko Thorpe. The boys were thrilled and we were very happy as our entire extended family are Seahawks fans.
My 7-year-old found out he was finally tall enough for the Panic Plunge and had been asking all morning when he was finally able to ride it. After receiving our autographs, we decided to follow the Seahawks players, and sure enough, they were headed to the Panic Plunge. The precarious weather worked out to our advantage because we ended up two people away from getting to ride on the Panic Plunge with Tedric, Neiko and the rest of the Seahawks entourage, which I am certain worked out in our favor.
We had a front-row view watching the players as they nervously awaited the 140-foot ascent. Listening to their commentary on the way up and seeing their faces at the end was absolutely priceless. They were impressed a 7-year-old was so willing to free fall from 100 feet in the air. To my surprise he asked to go on again and again and again, he couldn’t get enough of that adrenaline rush. The Seahawks, however, were not so willing and carried on to their next destination.
Despite the fair weather, we still had a fulfilling day of fun at the park. We learned cooler days at the park are not so bad, especially when you have young kids. There are no lines, which means less whining about waiting and more fun. On a hot day, the wait to ride the more popular attractions can be grueling. We were able to ride the most popular attractions over and over with little to no waiting in line. What’s not to like about that?!
If you find yourself in a pickle without proper attire, be sure to visit the array of gift shops all around the park. They each have a slightly different collection of items that are congruent with what you are around. For example, Tremors gift shop has Tremor specific attire whereas Boulder Beach has summer-specific items. You can find blankets, sweatshirts, T-shirts, umbrellas, flipflops, etc. A few weeks ago we showed up to the park assuming it would be warm, but it was windy and cold. My 5-year-old was freezing and the gift shop saved the day with this Silverwood sweatshirt. He loves to show off his Silverwood sweatshirt with pride and he was so excited to wear it to the park again. He won’t take the hood off because he loves that it says Ride On. The gift shops are very reasonably priced and come in handy when you find yourself unprepared as we did.
If you happen to find yourself at the park on a day where the weather isn’t all that great you can certainly make the best of it. If it starts to rain or storm we recommend waiting for it to pass and enjoying many of the other things Silverwood has to offer.
- Grab a pizza and sit down to watch the award-winning Nick Norton Magic Show
- Eat at one of the tasty indoor restaurants like Lindy’s or High Moon Saloon which offers live music and entertainment.
- Kick back and relax with popcorn as you watch a black and white movie
- Take a scenic ride on the historic Engine no.7. But be aware there may be a “robbery” along the way to collect money for the non-profit organization Children’s Village.
- Tip: Be sure to take a blanket and grab a warm coffee and cocoa from The Victorian Coffee House across from the train station because it may be cold on fair weather days.
All in all, we had another great day at Silverwood.

My family loves theme parks. We try to go every summer. Although some people boast about other nearby state theme parks, I prefer Silverwood. Besides their price being the best ANYWHERE north of L.A., their water park is HUGE and with two wave pools, you are not on top of the other thousand swimmers like other parks. The grounds are clean and the landscape and foliage are gorgeous. With the addition of kid friendly park rides it really has something for everyone! Thrill rides for all ages and even some Grandma and Grandpa can enjoy. Save me a seat on the train and the antique cars Grandma!
